Triggered by the unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, America and its Allies were pitted against Japan and its Axis allies.
The resulting war throughout the Pacific, China & South-East Asia, saw some of the largest battles in history and ferocious fighting across Asia and the Pacific Islands. Missions such as the Doolittle Raid and great naval battles such as Coral Sea. Midway & Okinawa have become legendary. The war culminated in massive Allied air raids over Japan, and finally the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 & 9 August 1945.
The formal Japanese surrender took place aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.
