Description
On August 5, 1944, following a successful attack on Japanese forces just north of Changsha, P-40 Warhawks of the75th and 16th Fighter Squadrons, 23rd F.G., are attacked by enemy Nakajima fighters and a massive dog-fight has developed over the Hsiang Chiang river with aircraft wheeling and turning in all directions.
The action is set against the distinctive, haunting landscape of Southern China, Robert’s panoramic canvas capturing all the atmosphere of a crucial aerial campaign fought in the skies above a distant land so many years ago.
The First American Volunteer Group (AVG) – the Flying Tigers – arrived in China in April 1941, achieving significant success against the Japanese. On 4 July 1942 the unit was disbanded to be replaced by the 23rd Fighter Group USAAF, which kept the AVG’s aircraft along with a number of their pilots – including General Chennault as commander. Retaining the distinctive ‘Sharks Mouth’ nose art, along with the nick-name ‘The Flying Tigers‘, the 23rd went on to achieve similar combat success to the AVG.
