Description
8.20am on the morning of the 18th April 1942, in the final moments before take-off from the heaving deck of the carrier USS Hornet. The tension aboard reaches a crescendo as Colonel ‘Jimmy’ Doolittle brings the engines to full power, his B-25 straining against the brakes. Within seconds, he will hurtle off the deck into a 27 knot gale, followed by 15 intrepid Doolittle Raider crews, their destination- Tokyo!
Their mission, a bomber strike at the very heart of Imperial Japan.
Flying their sixteen-bomber force on a long distance one-way mission, the Doolittle Raiders completed the first strike on Imperial Japan since the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor four months earlier. Together, they completed one of the most audacious air raids in aviation history.
