Unofficially nicknamed the ‘Yoxford Boys’, after the village of Yoxford near their Fighter base, The 357th began operating from Leiston, England in February 11th, 1944 as the first all P-51 Mustang Fighter Group in the Eighth Air Force. The Group’s success in WWII was unrivalled and its Pilots flew 313 combat missions scoring 595 ½ aerial victories and 106 ½ on the ground – the highest scoring in air-to-air combat of any P-51 group in the 8th Air Force.

The unit was home to 42 Aces, the most of any European Theater Fighter Group, and included such legendary pilots as Kit Carson, Bud Peterson, Bud Anderson & Chuck Yeager.
