Called up from the Volunteer Reserve in August 1940 he flew with Douglas Bader in 616 Sqn before commanding 610 Sqn. He flew operations over the Channel, France, and the great air battles over Dieppe, before commanding the Canadian Spitfire Wing, which he led over the beaches of Normandy, Arnhem and into Germany.

Scoring his last victory in September 1944, ‘Johnnie’ finished WWII as the highest scoring Allied Western Fighter Ace, with 38 aerial victories.
