PACIFIC AIRBASE

Description

Somewhere in the Solomon Island chain, maintenance is performed on a Marine F4U-1 Corsair “Birdcage” in he hot tropical sun as others return from a fighter sweep. Pilots and support personnel lived in crude conditions on these islands and supplies were often limited. Despite this, ground crews managed to keep these fighters in fighting condition using whatever resources available. Many times, damage planes were kept around as parts were often salvaged from them to keep others flying.
