HELL IS FOR HELLCAT

Description

There were a series of air battles on June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The Japanese weren’t aware that American radar allowed for fighter intercepts far from their carriers. A Japanese force comprised of Zeros and Jills headed for US Task Force 5 were completely surprised to find themselves suddenly under attack from Grumman Hellcats of VF-15 off the  US carrier Essex. In a matter of minutes, VF-15 claimed 20 kills.
