Description
On August 16 over 1700 German aircraft crossed the coast and R.A.F. bases in the south-east were taking a pounding. Hawkinge, a satellite of the Biggin Hill sector station, lay right in the path of the raiding Luftwaffe hordes.
As evening shadows lengthen, MkI Spitfires of No.610 Squadron make their third scramble of the day out of Hawkinge airfield, in the South of England. They will intercept another large Luftwaffe raid targeted on RAF airfields, during the Battle of Britain fought in the summer of 1940.
