Description
The legendary B-17 Memphis Belle, heads home to RAF Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire, England after another grueling daylight mission over Germany in early 1943.
Assigned to the 324th Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, the Memphis Belle and her crew had been flying combat missions since November 1942. At a time when the chance of survival for heavy bomber crews was perilously low, every return home was a triumph in itself and by the spring of 1943, the Belle had become one of the most celebrated American bombers of the war.
Within weeks, the Memphis Belle would achieve legendary status. On May 17, Captain Robert Morgan and his crew completed their 25th officially credited combat mission and two days later, the aircraft itself completed its 25th combat mission. This extraordinary milestone that would see the Belle and her crew return to the United States on a high-profile war-bond tour.
More than just a famous aircraft, the Memphis Belle came to symbolize the courage, determination and sacrifice of the thousands of young American airmen who took the war to the skies of Germany from the airfields of England.
