Description
The first Grumman F4F Wildcats of VMF-223 arrived on Guadalcanal August 20 1942. The next day, August 21, four Wildcats from the Marine group flew their first mission. Just south of Savo Island Wildcats ran into 13 of the famed A6M Zeros in a lop-sided encounter.
The two groups of aircraft flew through each other in a head-on pass. Two Wildcats were heavily damaged, but made it back to Guadalcanal, only to be written off as total losses. The Zeros, who had descended into the Wildcats from about five hundred feet above, suffered no losses this day. The first engagement between Wildcats and Zeros was over as quickly as it began.
