P40 Kittyhawks of No.112 Squadron clash with Bf109s of JG27 over the Libyan desert, February 1942. Led by ‘Killer’ Caldwell and later, Billy Drake, No.112 Squadron was in constant combat with Edu Neumann’s JG27 fighters as they jousted for air-supremacy above Rommel’s advancing Afrika Korps tanks. Below them, the desolate beauty of the Libyan desert stretches as far as the eye can see.
The air war fought in the skies above the inhospitable wastelands of the North African desert were among the most hotly contested of the war. The outcome of the bitter land war raging below largely depended upon who controlled the air space above, and both sides knew it.
This powerful print is individually signed by the artist Nicolas Trudgian alongside two RAF and two Luftwaffe pilots who fought in the desert campaign, including two legendary commanders of 112 Squadron:
Hauptmann EMIL CLADE – 27 victories
Group Captain BILLY DRAKE – 24 victories
Squadron Leader NEVILLE DUKE – 27 victories
Oberst EDUARD NEUMANN – 13 victories
Released in 2001 this stunning piece has been completely sold out for many years. The print is personally autographed by some of the most iconic Luftwaffe and RAF Pilots who fought in the desert during WWII, making this a great acquisition for aviation art collectors and history enthusiasts alike.
