In violation of the Treaty of Versailles, the Kriegsmarine grew rapidly during the 1930s and in 1939 the German Plan Z was begun. It was a massive shipbuilding program intended to equal the British Royal Navy – the world’s largest and most fearsome Navy.

During WWII control of the seas was so crucial that it resulted in some of the most bitterly fought campaigns in the history of warfare.
