Description
On May 3, 1937 the Hindenburg departed from Frankfurt to undertake its first round-trip journey across the Atlantic to the USA. The flight was uneventful until the tragedy that struck three days later when the Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed whilst attempting to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey.
Coulson’s powerful and dramatic painting depicts the moment that this iconic airship burst into flames on May 6, 1937. Publicity of this this infamous tragedy shattered public confidence and effectively ended the burgeoning “golden age” of airship travel.
