Description
With soft evening sunlight radiant behind them, Hauptmann Wolfgang Ewald, Gruppenkommandeur of 1./JG52, leads a schwarm of Bf109s back to their base near Calais after another hectic encounter with pilots of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, September 1940.
It has been the final mission of a long, hard day of aerial combat that has witnessed several deadly encounters with the Spitfires and Hurricanes of RAF Fighter Command over southern England. Although they cannot let their guard drop for an instant, the Luftwaffe pilots can, just for a moment, enjoy flying in such a radiant, peaceful cloudscape, and the thought of a good rest. Flying, and action, will inevitably resume tomorrow.
This evocative painting pays a fitting tribute to the Luftwaffe pilots who fought during this crucial period in history.
