Description
Flying low over the English countryside, a lone RAF Lancaster returns home in the early hours after a grueling night time bombing mission over Germany.
The Avro Lancaster was the work horse of RAF Bomber Command and the most successful bomber of WWII, flying 156,000 missions during WWII. With its long, unobstructed bomb bay it could carry the largest bombs used by the RAF, including the 22,000 lb “Grand Slam”, and its range of 1,660 miles meant the “Lanc” was perfect to take the night bombing campaign to Hitler’s Third Reich.
Lancaster crews came from many corners of the British Commonwealth, and in particular Canadian, New Zealand and Australian airmen joined the RAF to fly this mighty aircraft. And it was these crews and the Lancaster that were chosen for some of the most iconic bombing missions of WWII, including the Dambusters, Peenemunde, the sinking of the Tirpitz and D-Day.
