Volunteering for the RCAF in 1941 he flew Mustangs on photo reconnaissance missions from England with 414 Sqn RCAF. In January 1944 he transferred to the USAAF, joining the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Sqn flying Spitfires and F-6 Mustangs.

Clyde flew throughout the Normandy invasions scoring his first victory over a Fw190, on D-Day and from there his victories quickly increased. By the end of WWII he had flown over 200 combat missions and scored 13 victories, becoming the top Ace in the Group. He flew another 100 combat missions during the Korean War, and in 1962 was decorated for recon missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
